Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004) dir. Brad Silberling

[ piano music playing in the background ]

I live in a slightly dilapidated mansion at the end of a street south of the Banking district. My name is Count Olaf. My age is none of your goddamn business.

I believe that diet and exercise routines are for losers with boring social lives. In the morning, I eat cornflakes with desert wine instead of milk because it tastes better. I resent the phrase ‘drinking problem’ because that implies I’m bad at drinking when I’m pretty much the opposite. After breakfast, I look at myself in the mirror from different angles. I rarely shower because unless I’m covered in ash or blood or something, there’s no point. I don’t use any product on my face because my face is already flawless the way it is.

There is an idea of Count Olaf. No, wait… idea isn’t the right word. I prefer to think of myself as a legendary figure. A demi-god, if you will. Like Hercules, but way better. Anyway.

There is no real me, only a disguise. Something figurative. And though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours, and maybe you even think you know me because you’ve seen my plays, I simply am not there.

1, 2, 10, 11. :D

1. Why did you choose the character you play?

Well. I guess I picked Olaf because back in like year 6 when I first got the DVD of the Snicket movie I became deeply, deeply obsessed with the Jim Carey screen tests and the Ghost Story easter egg because A) I had never seen anything like that on a dvd special features and B) They were so much more fulfilling to me as a fan of the books than the final cut of the film ever was in terms of Olaf’s characterisation. So by the time I was thinking of who to audition as for LSRP, I was still able to quote almost all of Olaf’s screen test monologues word for word so it just seemed like a no-brainer.

2. Do you associate yourself with this character in any way?

I think I do a bit. All my characters contain varying degrees of Zelda-ness, obviously Olaf not as much as my OCs because canon and all that, but I still project myself into my headcanons. Also I think I’m a bit theatrical deep down in my soul. That’s probably why I like Olaf so much in the first place.

10. Are there any songs you associate with your muse?

When You’re Evil by Voltaire, Seven Devils by Florence + The Machine, Amanda Palmer’s ukulele cover of Creep by Radiohead, and of course Scream and Run Away by the Gothic Archies because duh.

11. If you could tell your character something right now what would it be?

probably just ‘how dare you’ and ‘stop that’
